1963 James M25 Superswift, 249cc. Registration number 702 GAT. Frame number FM25 808. Engine number 428D 13793.
Sold with the V5C, key, front screen and a pair of panniers.
The Superswift was introduced in 1962 using the Villiers 2T two-stroke, twin cylinder engine, this and the four-speed gearbox sat in a composite frame – there was a front and top downtube, a fabricated central section and pressed rear mudguard; front suspension was telescopic forks and brakes were six inch drums.
James were famously known for their maroon livery but the Superswift featured the dazzling Riviera Blue colour scheme. There was a good amount of chrome to polish and the complete drive chain enclosure helped to keep the rear end free from oil spatter – doubly important because the Superswift was originally fitted with eye-catching whitewall tyres.
Originally supplied by Myers and Marshall of Springbank, Hull, it was owned by Philip Kirby in 1987, our vendor bought it in 2016 with the intention of a restoration during his retirement. This never happened although the engine turns over freely.
