John (from 1872, Sir John) Bennett, a late 19th century electrotype mantle clock, of architectural form, silvered dial, the signed movement numbered 2774 striking the half and hours on a bell, the rear door with winged cherubs, pendulum, 33cm.
Bennett was a very extravagant personality, having many business and political interests, as well as having a wife and mistress. Between 1839 and the late 1920's his shop front in Cheapside featured large Gog and Magog figures on the front of the grand Bennett's Clock Shop. After that, they went on permanent vacation to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
