The Garelli company was founded in 1919 by the engineer Adalberto Garelli. The company produced small displacement two-stroke motorcycles and mopeds until it closed its doors in 1987. The initial offering was a 350cc machine. Many famous Italian racers including Tazio Nuvolari and Achille Varzi began their racing careers on Garelli bikes. The Garelli 350 cc split-single stayed in production until 1926 and made a major impact in racing. The company also produced motorcycles for the Royal Italian Army. After World War II, Garelli concentrated on producing smaller bikes and mopeds for the European market. The K50L was an unrestricted, and quite rapid two stroke. It was never officially marketed in the UK due to the change in law regarding access to mopeds by sixteen year olds, and is subsequently less than common over here today.
PFE appears to have been imported, or at least registered with the DVLA, in 2012, and has only changed hands once since, being acquired by the present owner in 2016. It is in largely original condition, and could be restored or used as it is. Even the rare factory exhaust is still fitted.
On test it started first kick, and once warm rode around our premises with good pick-up and a turn of speed. Our vendor advises that brakes, tyres and bearings are all in good order. There is an electronic speedometer, although this will require a new battery.
