The Dominator is a twin cylinder motorcycle developed by Norton to compete against the Triumph Speed Twin, originally designed in 1947 by Bert Hopwood, who had been on the Speed Twin design team at Triumph. Available for sale from mid 1949 as the Model 7, the new 500cc engine went into the existing ES2 plunger-frame/tele-fork cycle parts, a marriage that necessitated a redesign of Norton's well-proven four-speed gearbox. this design set the pattern for Norton twins for the next 30 years.
Norton's 500cc twin found a new home in the racing singles' 'Featherbed' duplex frame in November 1951. Initially for export only, the newcomer - titled 'Dominator 88' - was the first production Norton roadster to feature the lightweight, race-proven chassis. Updated year by year, by the decade's end the Dominator had received an alloy cylinder head, full-width hubs, welded rear subframe, alternator electrics, coil ignition and - for 1960 - the narrower 'slimline' Featherbed frame among countless other improvements. The model was last produced in 1963.
LRA DVLA history goes back to 1997 when Eric Foulkes of Mold recommissioned his fathers old machine, they allowed the use of the old number although it is now non transferable. MOT's from then start at 152 miles, rising slowly to 2,079 in 2005 when it came off the road. In 2007 it underwent an engine rebuild and by 2013 it had risen to 3,194 miles. In November 2019 our vendor purchased it but a recent purchase has now taken his fancy. He has recently sorted out the wiring loom that was a bit frayed.
Sold with the V5C, old MOT's and tax discs, together with various receipts, this unrestored, matching numbers machine has a lovely patina.
