1959 MGA Mk1 Roadster 1500, 1489 cc, project. Registration number 545 UMM. Chassis number HDK13/61829. Engine number 15GD - U - H407. Body number 78675.
The MGA was a sports car produced by the MG division of The British Motor Corporation from 1955 to 1962. It replaced the older "T-type" cars and represented a complete styling break from the, effectively pre-war, older vehicles. The A was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955. 52,478 Mk1 1500's were produced and 1,849 sold on the home market, giving the MGA the highest export percentage of any British car at that time, and was duly replaced by the MGB in May 1962. During World War II, a large number of American army personnel fell in love with British Sports cars, and consequently following the war and during the 1950s, many were shipped back to the USA and order books at MG, Triumph and Austin-Healey were overwhelmed by orders from 'across the pond'.
The 1489 cc engine fitted with twin H4 type SU Carburettors produced 68 hp at first, but was soon uprated to 72 hp. Lockheed hydraulic drum brakes were used on all wheels. A coupé version was also produced.
UMM was first registered on 7th of May 1959 in Middlesex and is one of the last 119 RHD UK cars built that year (the lowest of all 1500's) as it was replaced by the 1600 in the May of 1959.
Our vendor pulled it out of a barn in 1986 and put it in his with the intention of restoring it at some point in the future. Other projects took precedence and it has remained there ever since although several years he got the engine running with good oil pressure. It is believed to basically complete except for the passenger seat although prospective bidders should satisfy themselves of this.
Sold with the V5C.
