1972 SAAB 96 V4, 1498cc. Registration number BHH 547L. Chassis number 96732001698. Engine number 254694.
The Saab 96 was built from 1960 to January 1980, replacing the 93, with an aerodynamic two-door bodywork, four-passenger seating and at first a two-stroke, three-cylinder engine, later in 1967 the Ford Taunus four-stroke V4.
The Saab 96 was driven most famously by Erik Carlsson, in many international rallies. His most famous successes were first in the 1960, 1961 and 1962 RAC Rallies and first in the 1962 and 1963 Monte Carlo Rallies.
It had a column shift gearbox that has to have reverse selected to remove the ignition key. An unusual feature is the 'freewheel' (overrunning clutch). This allows the transmission to run faster than the engine, such as when decelerating, or descending a long hill.
BHH is a 3 owner example that displays 54,353 miles on the odometer, unwarranted. MOT history goes back to 2006 at 48,614 miles and was last undertaken in 2010 at 54,181 miles. In recent years it has been stored in our vendors garage and he has now decided it is time for a new custodian. She was recommissioned and driven the 40 odd miles to the saleroom with no issues.
Offered in good condition, this iconic car is sold with the V5C and several old MOT's.
