£4,000 - £5,000
1976 Gilera Enduro, 49 cc. Registration number OBU 789P. Frame number *036*1083*. Engine number *019*32745*.
Gilera was an Italian motorcycle manufacturer founded in Arcore in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera. In 1935, they acquired the rights to the Rondine four-cylinder engine. It was at that time, the world's most powerful engine with 60 hp. The first across-the-frame 4-cylinder motorcycle was the racer 1939 Gilera 500 Rondine. After withdrawing from competition in 1957, Gilera changed direction abruptly. They downplayed their hitherto successful line of four-stroke singles and began to focus on motocross and off-road events in association with independent specialist Elmeca. Sales declined through the 1960s and by 1968 the company was in receivership being bought by Piaggio.
The Enduro was the alternate dream moped of the 1970's for the youth of that time. Whilst the Yamaha FS1E's & AP50's were grabbing the headlines the Gilera was the real superstar, the moped that looked like a motorbike.
OBU was fully restored by the previous owner to our vendor and was then displayed at his home. Our vendor purchased it, along with three other fully restored machines, in April 2019, for his own collection. They have remained in a bike cocoon and not used or fired up.
Sold with the V5C, and a period brochure, this rare bike will need recommissioning if you wish to take it on the road or else it is ready for display in your sitting room. Purchasers are recommended to check fluid levels before any use.
