Jaguar's first response to demands for an open-top XJS adopted a stylish Targa top, cleverly concealing a substantial roll hoop in the interests of maintaining rigidity and safety. Two removable panels could be stored easily in the boot and the new Cabriolet featured a pair of luggage lockers topped by a parcel shelf in place of the Coupé's two occasional rear seats.
Essentially an exercise in niche marketing to test public reaction, the XJS Cabriolet's production was entrusted to outside specialists prior to final detail checking and despatch from the Brown's Lane factory. The Cabriolet was favourably received and although the lusty 5.3-litre engine found favour, the 3.6-litre version provided superior economy while still offering Jaguar's trademark exhilarating and silky smooth performance.
RUM is a manual example, finished in red with a tan leather interior. With only 5 owners over the years, it was with John Gretton of Scarborough in 1997 before our vendor bought it in 2010. A talented mechanic he has kept on top of all the maintenance required.
The extensive MOT history goes back to 1998 at 79, 522 miles, a few miles being added every year, the 100,000 came up in 2003, the current MOT in May 2021 was at 118, 664.
It is only being sold as the vendors legs do not bend as well as they used to!
