J.W. Gantlett, Calne, a Victorian silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch, London 1851, white enamel dial with Roman numerals, the signed movement numbered 4649, outer case 52mm.
John Wadham Gantlett was the brother of Quintillian, and was born in Somerford in 1801. In 1830 his watch and clockmaking business was listed in Great Sherston, but by 1851 he was living in Church Street Calne and working for his brother Quintillian in the High Street. By 1859 he had taken over the business when his brother moved to Chippenham. He was listed there there until 1867. He died, aged 70 in 1870, and was buried in Calne.
dial in good condition, the replacement glass has yellowed, movement working when catalogued, both cases match.
