Brian Tozer (b.1944). Curley, Crow Scout, stoneware clay ceramic tile adhesive, painted wood frame, 163 x 102cm. ARR
Tozer was commissioned to undertake a series of Native American sculptures, for the UK and Canadian market in 1999/2000. The clay was fired to 1240 degrees and then decorated, often with natural products.
Ashishishe (c. 1856–1923), known as Curly (or Curley), was a Crow scout in the United States Army during the Sioux Wars, best known for having been one of the few survivors on the United States side at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He did not fight in the battle, but watched from a distance, and was the first to report the defeat of General Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment.
