The London Gazette, 11th July 1939 records that Squadron Leader Geoffrey Aste was promoted to Wing Commander on the 6th June 1939, he served in the 907th (County of Middlesex) Squadron, they were a barrage balloon squadron base in North London with 5 Flights of 9 balloons. At the outbreak of war in 1939 there were about 42 Squadrons operating barrage balloons, with the number of squadrons peaking at about 102 in 1944, they were accredited with the destruction of 279 V1 flying bombs.
