ISDT success in the late 1940's prompted Triumph to adopt the Trophy name for their off-road styled twins. They were developed over the years becoming the TR6 (UK), TR6R (USA, sports version with low pipes) and the TR6C (USA, competition version with high pipes). Although it retained its sporting character, the model became more of a roadster as time passed, ending up, in effect, as a single-carburetor Bonneville. More tractable than the Bonnie and more economical too, the Trophy gave little away in terms of outright performance, the bike's standing quarter mile time and top speed being within a whisker of its twin-carb sibling's. With the launch of BSA-Triumph's much revised 'oil-in-frame' range in November 1970, the 'Tiger' name was revived for the TR6R roadster while the TR6C street scrambler version continued to be known as the 'Trophy'. Incredibly, tooling to build the new frames had not been procured, leading to severe production delays that prevented machines reaching the market for some months.
A five-speed gearbox was announced in 1971 and for 1972, the TR6 became the TR6R Tiger (for road use) and TR6C Trophy model for off-road use. In 1973, the 650cc engine was replaced by a 750cc unit with a revised frame and front disc brake, but inroads by the Japanese along with the general malaise of the British motorcycle industry saw the formation of the Norton-Villiers-Triumph conglomeration that year. Such were the protests against shifting production from Meriden to the BSA factory in Birmingham that a co-operative was established in March 1975 to resume manufacture of the Bonneville at the traditional home of Triumph. Sadly, this too ultimately proved futile and the door was finally closed at Meriden in 1983, ending a proud chapter in British motorcycling history.
EKH was built in Febuary 1972 and first registered on the 1st August 1973 as NWU 67M, and by August 1988 in was with Graham Sutcliffe. He sold it to our vendor in May 1990. In August 2008 when the mileage was about 26,000 he successfully applied to DVLA to have the correct year suffix and it was issued with the current EKH 361K.
Used sparingly over his ownership, the last MOT in July 2017 was at 29,957 miles, today the clock shows 30,054 miles.
Sold with the V5C, MOT history , re registration document and two keys.
