1973 BMW 2002 Baur Convertible, 1996cc. Registration number PGK 137L. Chassis number 2791089. Engine number 2791089. Mileage today is 78806.
The Baur Karosserie (German for coachbuilder) has been around since 1910 and is mostly remembered for its unconventional ways of transforming regular cars into cabriolets. Baur Cabriolets aren’t plagued by structural problems as they retain the saloon’s roofline, B and C pillars. This was the USA market was having issues with full convertibles, so they were contracted by BMW to make topless 2002s, and decided to fit their Cabriolets with an integrated quasi-rollcage. And since that was in place, it made sense to leave the A, B and C pillars around it intact as well. This was how a Baur Cabriolet came to be. It was replaced in 1975 by the E21 iteration of 3-series.
It is believed only some 260 RHD were produced and the number left on the road is in single figures.
This wonderful example has MOT history going back to 1984 at 78,089 miles, it turned the clock in 1987. By 1991 it was in poor condition and owner has it fully stripped and rebuilt by specialists Jaymic. The bodywork alone costing some £5200. The engine was also fully stripped and rebuilt with a lead free head. There is a photographic record of this work. A BMW 5 series gearbox was installed, as was electric power steering, Webber twin choke carb with fuel injection and a stainless steel exhaust system.
The interior was fully retrimmed with period correct hounds tooth fabric and the centre consul now boasts an Apple Play system. The targa roof and convertible roof were both renewed.
Since the restoration it has only covered a few hundred miles per annum and is still in very good condition.
Our vendor bought it at auction last year with the intention of long term ownership but his work has now taken him overseas so Spicers have been asked to find a new home for it.
Sold with the V5C, MOT until October 2023, MOT history, huge history folder, service books, original steering wheel and the photographic record of the restoration. This 2002 Baur must be one of the best available today and drove very smoothly on the test drive.
