Of Royal HRH Edward VII interest; A William IV rosewood fold over card table, the rectangular top with moulded edge over a carved frieze, opening to reveal a baize top, the fluted baluster pillar support above a carved collar and circular base, raised on four carved cabriole legs with scroll feet and brass castors, 92 x 45cm (closed).
Provenance; ex lot 659, 29th May 1998, Dee, Atkinson & Harrison, Driffield.
Sold with a letter from B. West stating the table was brought from the home of Christopher Sykes, Brantinghamthorpe Hall by his grandfather in the early 20th century. The Prince of Wales (later HRH Edward VII) was regular visitor to the Hall as Sykes hosted him when visiting the Doncaster races. Also it is stated it was used during the Baccarat Scandal of 1890 by the Wilson shipping family at Tranby Croft (this cannot be verified). Also sold with various literature relating to the scandal and a book about the Wilson's of Tranby Croft.
