First introduced at Monte-Carlo by BMC on 20th May 1958 and intended as a low-cost model, the Sprite was designed by the Healey Motor Company and was Nicknamed "Frog Eye". Manufactured at the MG sports car factory at Abingdon, it was not surprising that the success of the design would lead to an MG version known as the Midget. The final version of the Austin-Healey Sprite arrived in 1966 as the Mk. IV. The new model now used a twin carburettor 1275cc version of the proven A-Series engine which it shared with other BMC models such as the Mini Cooper S.
YOK was fully restored to a very high standard in1990 when it received a new Heritage shell. In 2003 it was owned by Robin Hildick and our vendor bought it in 2007 with a mileage of 87,752 on the clock, today it reads 93,855. Since that time he kept a detailed list of all works, including a engine rebuild in 2009, piston rings, big end shells along with rebuilding the carbs, costing about £1000, the gearbox was also rebuilt as well as a new fuel tank. In 2010 all of the suspension and braking system was upgraded and overhauled. 2011 the interior was stripped and replaced with biscuit leather and new carpets. In 2014 the soft was removed and a hardtop fitted, the fronts wings and bonnet were replaced with new and painted. The report stops in 2016 and the last MOT was undertaken in 2017 at 93,807 miles.
Since that time the car stayed in his garage under cover and at weekends his friends would sit on deckchairs admiring it.
Today it presents very well, the underside is as clean as the top and must be one of the better examples in the UK, offered on behalf of the executors of his estate.
