1979 Garelli Tiger Junior Cross, 49 cc. Registration number XVT 74M. Frame number not found stated H50 1313. Engine number E050573, 203716.
Garelli was founded in 1919 by Italian engineer Adalberto Garelli who designed his own two-stroke 350 cc engine and achieved national and international success. Garelli sports mopeds were imported into Britain by Agrati Sales (UK) Ltd and the first models were the Rekord and Tiger Cross being one of the fastest at the time reaching speeds of 60mph. In the early 1980s, Garelli dominated the 125 class in Grand Prix motorcycle racing winning six consecutive world championships between 1982 and 1987.
The Tiger has stainless steel front and rear mudguards, Ceriani folks, and an anti-slip half suede seat. The two-stroke 49cc air cooled engine is quoted as producing 6.5bhp and capable of speeds on the flat of 60mph making it one of the most powerful and fastest sports mopeds of its time. Drum brakes front and rear provide adequate braking.
XVT was fully restored by the previous owner to our vendor and was then displayed at his home. Our vendor purchased it, along with three other fully restored machines, in April 2019, for his own collection. They have remained in a bike cocoon and not used or fired up.
Sold with the V5C, and a saddle bag, this rare bike will need recommissioning if you wish to take it on the road or else it is ready for display in your sitting room. Purchasers are recommended to check fluid levels before any use.
