1972 VW Beetle 1300cc. Registration number CBT 196K. Chassis number 122414662. Engine number AB462222.
One of the 20th Century's truly great automobiles, the Volkswagen 'Beetle' lived down its origin as Hitler's 'people's car' to become an all-time best-seller and cult classic. The Beetle was continuously up-dated from the time post-war production commenced in 1945, acquiring subtly altered coachwork, improved running gear and larger engines. Development proceeded slowly to begin with, the first major change to the original design being made in 1953 when a larger, 1,192cc engine was introduced on the '1200' model. Export models were built to a higher specification, incorporating hydraulic brakes and synchromesh gears, but even as late as 1962 the standard saloon was being built with cable brakes and a non-synchromesh gearbox. Greater window area and revised, ball-jointed front suspension were among the most significant developments for 1965, and in the following year the standard, 34bhp 1200 model was joined by the new 1300 equipped with the more powerful 50bhp engine. By the time European production ceased in 1974, a staggering 21,000,000-plus Beetles of all types had been made.
CBT, in Turquoise Metallic, has led a pampered life, first purchased by Miss Rose Cograve of Hessle, from Green Arrow Garage of Hessle on the 27th April 1972, who traded in her rusting Morris 1300 for the Beetle, she would not take it out in the rain. Serviced every six months by St. Matthew Street Garage of Beverley until 1979 (mileage 12,180), then by Longson, again of Beverley until they bought it from Miss Cograve in March 1987 at 21,500 miles. In 1981 the near front wing was painted as she had scratched it. Mrs Longson was not keen on the car so it was taken off the road in in May 1989 at 30,149 miles. Recommissioned in February 1995 it was bought by our vendor on the 26th July 1996 for £4,000.
He has continued with a yearly service, mainly by Mill Lane Autos of Beverley, the last being in June 2019 when the mileage had increased to 40,634 miles. In 2011 the near side rear wing was painted after a garage scratch. Otherwise the car is completely original, it has never been restored, it appears to have no rust anywhere, the interior (without a radio) is unmarked, rarely do you find cars of this calibre and originality.
Sold with the V5C, V5, VE66, the majority of its MOTs, service book from October 1977 until July 1998 at 32,707 miles, service receipts and a quantity of tax discs, Spicers can highly recommend this Beetle to her next custodian.
